Assalamualaikum everyone!.

At first, when I studied this EDG 1502 subject, I felt confused because I thought this subject is about motivation program in school such as facilitator program. Then after enter the class for second times, I get brief idea about it. In my opinion, this subject is actually train future school counselors to know what guidance and counseling program they are expected to do for their profession. It also helps them to evaluate every guidance and counseling program that they have done in their schools. Last week, Dr Siraje gave me one reading material and the title is The Current Status of School Counseling Outcome Research. This reading material is very interesting because now I know that there are some research have been done by researchers for enhancing school counselor profession. I thought school counselor profession is just ancillary profession but I was wrong. Actually school counselors also play crucial role as well as teachers. My reflection on this reading material is I am attracted and excited to discuss about No Child Left Behind (NCLB).NCLB sound like our government now command every parents to send their children to school. So, their children will become educated. No excuses will be accepted such as poverty because nowadays the government already eliminated the school fees for primary and secondary schools. If their children have learning disabilities, the parents should not feel worried because most of the schools nowadays provide one special class called “remedy class”. ”Remedy class” is not just teach learning disability’s children how to read, write and count but also teach them about soft skills such as sewing and cooking. So, if they still cannot catch up the school curriculum and did not past the exam, they can survive in their lives. After their children are given more attention by teachers, then they can digest and practice whatever they have learnt in the school. So it is counselors’ duties to conduct assessment for all students and trace the problematic students. Then the counselors should give them counseling and send them to the remedy class. I still remember in my former secondary school, we do not have remedy class yet. Students who have learning disabilities are left behind and finally quit from school. Now most of them only work as farmers for boys and housewives for girls. Besides, the counselor only emphasize on students who want to sit for big examination such as PMR, SPM and STPM in that year. The counselor will call and outsiders such as a great teacher on a particular subject like mathematics, science and English. In addition to give the students motivation talk, the counselor invited guest such as Dr. Fadzilah Kamsah. After I finished my study in that school for two years, I asked my sister about what are still lacking in school counselor profession. Then she said now in that school the counselors have done their part effectively. The school is no longer inviting an outsider guest to give motivation talk but the school counselors themselves to give the talk. Moreover the remedy class is also established. It shows many improvements have been done to embark school counselor profession. Next my own view about the role of school counselor are I feel quite happy because long time ago school counselors have been trained as mental health providers rather than as student advocates, school leaders and empirical researchers but it slowly changing and more emphasize on career planning and placement, problem solving and class scheduling. It is because I don’t understand why class scheduling is put under the school counselors?. Why not put under the administrator themselves. Don’t you think that it is difficult task?. In my opinion, school counselors have more important duties that they need to do. Every single time is valuable to use it effectively. I don’t know whether all school counselors nowadays use The Comprehensive Developmental Guidance Program model or not. It is because according to this model, it emphasizes school counseling as a core educational program rather than a set of ancillary support services, but what I see and experience was not like that. In fact, school counselors have to do many inconsequential or unimportant tasks such as send students who are sick in school, find students who are not come to school, replace the teachers’ class if he or she could not attain the class. To be honest, actually I am not interested to join guidance and counseling program when I was in secondary school because of those experiences. But suddenly my interest is develop when I join Peer Group under the school counselor. Actually I have three school counselors in my school. But there is only one school counselor who is command by principal to be and work serious as school counselor and the other two counselors just as his assistants. I hope all school counselors implement that model so that school counselors which areknown as ancillary profession can be change to the most crucial profession in school setting.
